Shizuoka

Shizuoka runs from the eastern foot of Mount Fuji down the Izu peninsula, hot-spring country with the sea on three sides: the resort town of Atami on the coast, and the older spa villages of Shuzenji, Izu-Nagaoka and Yugashima in the wooded hills of the interior.

Our places run from Gora Kadan Fuji, facing the summit from Subashiri, and Atami, where The Hiramatsu Atami looks over Sagami Bay, through Numazu Club in a pine grove at the head of the peninsula, to Asaba, kept by the same family in Shuzenji since 1484, and Ochiairo, where Kawabata wrote, above the Amagi rivers. We know 9 places to stay here, 6 of them ryokans. At 8 of them, every room has its own hot-spring bath.

How to choose

  • For the summit straight ahead

Gora Kadan Fuji: suites looking due west at Fuji’s summit

  • For a first ryokan, with dinner in the room

Asaba Ryokan: kaiseki in your room, beside a Noh stage over the pond

  • For French food and a bath of your own

Arcana Izu: French dinner, and an open-air hot-spring bath in every suite above the Kano river

  • With children

Yagyu-no-Sho: children of all ages, with a children's kaiseki for ages 8 to 12

  • For the sea, close to the Shinkansen

The Hiramatsu Atami: every room faces Sagami Bay and has a hot-spring bath

When to go

Izu is milder than Tokyo in winter, with plum blossom at Atami from January and the early Kawazu cherry in February, and spring and autumn are pleasant throughout; August is busy on the coast, and the rainy season falls in June and early July.

How long

Two nights, from Tokyo, or on the way west to Kyoto.

Getting there

The Tokaido Shinkansen reaches Atami from Tokyo in about 45 minutes, and Shuzenji is about two hours from Tokyo by the Odoriko limited express, or by the Shinkansen to Mishima and the Izuhakone Railway; from Kyoto, Mishima is about 2 hours by Shinkansen. From Haneda, the train to Shinagawa takes about 20 minutes for the Shinkansen. For Gora Kadan Fuji, the Shinkansen to Mishima takes about 35 minutes from Shinagawa and a taxi about 40 minutes more.

Q&A

Asaba, Yagyu-no-Sho, Ochiairo and Sanyo-so all have a hot-spring bath in every room, and Arcana Izu and Fufu Atami give every room an open-air one. The Hiramatsu Atami has a hot-spring bath in each room too, facing Sagami Bay.

Atami is on the coast and on the Shinkansen, so it suits a night between Tokyo and Kyoto: Fufu Atami and The Hiramatsu Atami are there. Shuzenji and Yugashima, in the hills, are older and quieter, for Asaba, Yagyu-no-Sho, Ochiairo and Arcana Izu.

Yagyu-no-Sho, Ochiairo, Sanyo-so and The Hiramatsu Atami take children of all ages, and Fufu Atami has a child rate. Asaba takes children from 7, except in its Villa Tenko, and Arcana Izu only guests 12 and over.

Fufu Atami does not allow tattoos in its shared baths, but every room has its own open-air bath, and Sanyo-so may restrict them in the large baths. Arcana Izu and The Hiramatsu Atami have no shared baths, so you bathe in your room.
