Ise-Shima

Ise-Shima is the coast of the Ise shrines, the most sacred in Shinto, and of Ago Bay, where pearl rafts float among wooded inlets.

Most of our places look over the bay, from Amanemu at Hamajima and Cova Kakuda in a pearl farm's old workshop to The Hiramatsu Kashikojima and Shima Kanko Hotel The Bay Suites at Kashikojima. Yunoyama Sosuikyo is well apart from them, about 70 km to the north near Yokkaichi, in the hot-spring town below Mount Gozaisho, and suits a night on the way from Nagoya. We know 5 places to stay here. At Amanemu and Yunoyama Sosuikyo, every room has its own hot-spring bath.

How to choose

  • With children

Amanemu: children welcome, with a Kids Academy, and a hot-spring bath in every suite

  • For the food

The Hiramatsu Kashikojima: French cooking of Ise lobster and abalone over Ago Bay

  • For a quiet villa on the water

Cova Kakuda: four villas in a pearl farm's workshop on a cove, for guests 13 and over

  • For a suite over the bay

Shima Kanko Hotel The Bay Suites: suites of 100 sq m and up over the pearl rafts of Ago Bay

  • For a hot spring of your own

Yunoyama Sosuikyo: every villa has an open-air bath from the inn's own spring

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, and the coast is mild in winter; summer is hot and humid, and the Ise shrines are at their busiest over the New Year.

How long

Two nights, from Kyoto, Osaka or Nagoya.

Getting there

Kintetsu limited expresses reach Kashikojima from Nagoya in about two hours, from Osaka-Namba in about two and a half and from Kyoto in about 2 hours 45 minutes, and from Tokyo the Shinkansen to Nagoya takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Yunoyama Onsen is about an hour from Nagoya by express bus, and Chubu Centrair airport is about 30 minutes from Nagoya by train.
