Hakone
Hakone is a hot-spring district in the hills west of Tokyo, with mountain railways, a ropeway over the volcanic valley of Owakudani, art museums in the woods and, on clear days, Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi.
Our places run from the Hayakawa gorge at Tonosawa and Miyanoshita up to Gora and the open highland of Sengokuhara: Hakone Ginyu, with a terrace bath over the gorge, Gora Kadan in a former imperial summer villa, or Kinnotake Sengokuhara in a bamboo grove. We know 7 places to stay here, 5 of them ryokans. At 6 of them, every room has its own hot-spring bath.
How to choose
For a first ryokan, with dinner in the room
Gora Kadan: kaiseki in your room, in the Kan'in imperial summer villa
For a hot spring over the gorge
Hakone Ginyu: every room has an open-air hot-spring bath on a terrace facing the Hayakawa gorge
For two, with no young children about
Kinnotake Sengokuhara: guests 12 and over, nine rooms in a bamboo grove, dinner in the room
With children
The Hiramatsu Sengokuhara: children welcome, with children's plates and short courses on request
For French food
Kanaya Resort Hakone: French cooking eaten with chopsticks, and an Owakudani spring bath in every room
Which area
Where to stay in Hakone, area by area →When to go
Autumn, when the maples turn in early to mid November, and the clear days of winter, when Fuji is most often in view, are the best times; weekends and the Golden Week and August holidays bring crowds to the trains and roads.
How long
Two nights, between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Getting there
The Odakyu Romancecar runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85 minutes, or the Tokaido Shinkansen reaches Odawara from Tokyo in about 35 minutes, with the Hakone Tozan Railway on into the hills; from Kyoto, Odawara is about 2 hours by Shinkansen, and Haneda airport is about two hours by car.

Q&A
Many of them: Hakone Ginyu has an open-air bath on every terrace over the Hayakawa gorge, and both Kinnotake houses, at Tonosawa and Sengokuhara, give every room an outdoor hot-spring bath. Fufu Hakone, Kanaya Resort Hakone and The Hiramatsu Sengokuhara also have a hot-spring bath in each room.
Gora Kadan, Hakone Ginyu and Kinnotake Sengokuhara all serve kaiseki in the room; at Ginyu each room has its own dining room. Fufu Hakone and Kinnotake Tonosawa serve dinner in the restaurant.
Gora Kadan, Hakone Ginyu, Fufu Hakone and The Hiramatsu Sengokuhara all take children. Both Kinnotake houses are for guests 12 and over, and Kanaya Resort Hakone takes no children in some room types.
At Gora Kadan small tattoos are fine in the shared baths, and guests with larger ones use the private bath. Both Kinnotake houses, Kanaya Resort Hakone and The Hiramatsu Sengokuhara have no shared baths, so you bathe in your own room.
