Mount Fuji
The lakes and foothills below Mount Fuji are for looking at the mountain, from a window, a boat on Lake Kawaguchi or a walk in the woods around it.
Our places here look over Lake Kawaguchi from the north: Hoshinoya Fuji’s cabins on the hillside and Fufu Kawaguchiko by the water. Gora Kadan Fuji, facing the summit from Subashiri on the mountain’s eastern foot, is on our Shizuoka page. We know 2 places to stay here, 1 of them a ryokan. At Fufu Kawaguchiko, every room has its own hot-spring bath.
How to choose
For a hot-spring bath of your own
Fufu Kawaguchiko: every room has an open-air hot-spring bath laid with Fuji lava stone
With children, or a dog
Hoshinoya Fuji: cabins in a pine forest, under-12s share a bed, and pets in pet-friendly cabins
When to go
Late autumn and winter, from November to February, bring the clearest air and the most days with the mountain in view, with the lake maples in early to mid November; in summer Fuji is often hidden in cloud, and the climbing season in July and August fills the area.
How long
One or two nights, from Tokyo or in place of Hakone.
Getting there
Trains from Shinjuku reach Kawaguchiko in about two hours by way of Otsuki, as does the highway bus. Haneda airport is about two hours by car.

Q&A
Fufu Kawaguchiko looks over Lake Kawaguchi to the mountain, as do Hoshinoya Fuji’s cabins on the hillside above the lake. For the summit straight ahead, Gora Kadan Fuji, on our Shizuoka page, faces it due west from Subashiri.
Lake Kawaguchi has the boats and lakeside walks and is easier by train and bus from Shinjuku; Fufu Kawaguchiko and Hoshinoya Fuji are there. The Gotemba side, where Gora Kadan Fuji is, is closer to the Shinkansen at Mishima and suits a trip on to Hakone or Izu.
Both take children: Fufu Kawaguchiko has a child rate for 12 and under, and at Hoshinoya Fuji under-12s can share a bed.
Fufu Kawaguchiko does not say, but every room has its own open-air bath, and Hoshinoya Fuji has no public baths.
