Yunogawa, Yamashiro Onsen, Kagaあらや滔々庵

Araya Totoan

Araya Totoan is a 17-room ryokan in Yunogawa, the old centre of Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga, run by the Araya family for eighteen generations since its first head was made keeper of the Daishoji lords' bath in 1639, and built over the town's original spring. Its rooms look onto a mountain garden made in the Kan'ei era (1624–44), most have their own cypress tub of free-flowing spring water, and the lobby and a tea-room gallery show the calligraphy, ceramics and seal engravings of Kitaoji Rosanjin, who stayed at Yamashiro in 1915 and whose early work the fifteenth proprietor supported by ordering calligraphy, paintings and signboards.
