The building
The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka
Opened in May 1997 as the first Ritz-Carlton in Japan, with interiors evoking an 18th-century English aristocratic residence; rooms occupy floors 24 to 37. Between April and October 2024, 287 of the 291 rooms and the guest-floor corridors were renovated under the theme of 'inheritance and renewal', keeping the original furniture and floral motifs alongside new lighting, panelling and colours. Forbes Travel Guide Five Stars, 2023–2026.
W Osaka
Tadao Ando designed the black monolith exterior as a minimalist shell over exuberant interiors, a nod to Edo-period merchants who dressed plainly in public; the interiors are by concrete of Amsterdam, with an origami- and kirigami-inspired entrance tunnel, kokeshi dolls in the Living Room and an eBoy pixel 'pixorama' of Osaka behind each closet. Developed with Sekisui House and opened in March 2021.
