The Peninsula or the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong?
The Peninsula faces Victoria Harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side, a 1928 building with a tower added behind it in 1994; the Mandarin Oriental stands across the water on Connaught Road in Central, open since 1963 and just reopened after a renovation. The Peninsula is the one for the harbour from your room and for its two MICHELIN-starred restaurants; the Mandarin puts you among Central's offices, shops and bars.

The building
The Peninsula Hong Kong
Planned as 'the finest hotel east of Suez' and opened on 11 December 1928 by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels. The 30-storey Peninsula Tower, with 132 rooms and suites, opened behind the original building in December 1994, with Felix restaurant at the top. The guest rooms were redone in 2012-13 by The Gettys Group, with lighting by Fisher Marantz Stone.
Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong
Opened in 1963 as the first luxury hotel on Hong Kong Island. A renovation of more than US$100 million began in the second quarter of 2025 in four phases: Hubert de Malherbe is redesigning all the public spaces, including the lobby and an all-day lounge, Jeffrey Wilkes the guestrooms, suites and 11 new apartments, and Thierry Lemaire new signature suites.
