The Okura Tokyo or the Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon?
Neighbours in Toranomon, a short walk apart. The Okura is the 1962 grand hotel rebuilt in 2019 as a tower and a lower Heritage Wing, with Yoshiro Taniguchi's lobby reproduced by his son; the EDITION, opened in 2020, is Kengo Kuma and Ian Schrager's tower hotel with a sky lobby and bar on level 31 facing Tokyo Tower. One is quiet Japanese modernism and a choice of Japanese, French and Cantonese restaurants; the other is a bar scene, terraces and the view.

The building
The Okura Tokyo
Founded by Kishichiro Okura on his father Kihachiro's former estate and opened in 1962 as Hotel Okura, with interiors by the modernist architect Yoshiro Taniguchi drawing on Heian-period restraint. Rebuilt and reopened in 2019 as The Okura Tokyo; his son Yoshio Taniguchi designed the Heritage and Prestige lobbies, the latter a faithful reproduction of the 1962 Main Lobby.
The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon
Designed by Kengo Kuma with the vision of Ian Schrager; the sky lobby, Lobby Bar and Jade Room terrace are on level 31, and rooms use light wood furnishings.
