The building

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

Designed by the American architect John Portman around a fan-shaped atrium and opened as The Oriental, Singapore in 1987; renamed Mandarin Oriental after a refurbishment in 2005. A six-month transformation led by Jeffrey Wilkes of DesignWilkes, completed in September 2023, gave each room a palette after its view: batik patterns and cool blues for the bay, warm tones for the sea, botanical prints for the city.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore

Designed by the Pritzker laureate Kevin Roche for Pontiac Land: a single slender tower on 37-metre stilt-like legs, so that every room has a bay or city view, with octagonal bathroom windows. Tony Chi designed Colony and Summer Pavilion, and Terry Hunziker the Presidential Suite; the art collection runs to 4,200 pieces including Hockney, Warhol, Chihuly and Frank Stella.
