A 40-room hot-spring ryokan-style hotel from the FUFU group, on the Lake Biwa Canal near Nanzen-ji in Kyoto's Sakyo ward, next door to the Murin-an garden. Four low floors of lacquer and lattice rooms, each with its own hinoki cypress bath, set around a preserved Japanese garden with a detached wooden house used as the bar.

Fufu Nikko

A 24-suite hot-spring ryokan from the FUFU group in Nikko, beside the Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park on the site of the villa's 1914 annexe, a 14- to 16-minute walk from the World Heritage shrines and temples. The style is Taisho-era Japanese-Western, after the imperial villa, and every suite has an open-air bath fed by the hotel's own spring.
