A hotel brand in Japan
Hoshinoya
Hoshinoya is the luxury brand of Hoshino Resorts, a family company that began as a ryokan in Karuizawa in 1914.
The first Hoshinoya opened there in 2005, and each since has been built on a theme taken from its place's land, history and culture. Beyond Japan there are Hoshinoya Bali and Hoshinoya Guguan in Taiwan.

Q&A
Some are. Hoshinoya Tokyo and Hoshinoya Kyoto are run as ryokans; Hoshinoya Fuji is a hillside glamping resort, and Hoshinoya Okinawa and Hoshinoya Taketomi Island are island resorts.
No. At every Hoshinoya on our list dinner is booked separately after the room, and same-day cancellations are charged in full; Hoshinoya Kyoto and Hoshinoya Tokyo also serve dinner in the room if booked.
Hoshinoya Tokyo has hot-spring baths on its top floor, and Hoshinoya Karuizawa has the Tombo-no-yu bathhouse and a Meditation Bath. Hoshinoya Kyoto, Hoshinoya Nara Prison, Hoshinoya Okinawa and Hoshinoya Taketomi Island have no hot spring.
Hoshino Resorts does not bar tattoos, though Hoshinoya Tokyo may refuse the bath if staff judge they would cause discomfort. At Tombo-no-yu, by Hoshinoya Karuizawa, tattoos must be covered with stickers sold at reception.
