Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel
Amsterdam's most historic hotel, on the banks of the Amstel in the old centre, in a building that began as a watchtower in the medieval city walls. Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel opened in 1883.
The building began as a watchtower in the 16th-century city walls; Rembrandt lived next door and The Night Watch hung for over 70 years on a wall of what is now the Rembrandt Suite. The lobby was remade in 1880 in French neoclassical style with gilded ceilings showing the regions of the Netherlands and original Delft tiles; Empress Elisabeth stayed in the late 19th century and The Beatles in 1964, on their only visit to the Netherlands.
