Rosewood signs its first city hotel in Japan, in Roppongi

Rosewood announced on 15 May 2026 that Rosewood Tokyo will be its first urban hotel in Japan. It will be part of the Roppongi 5-Chome development in Minato City, Tokyo, a joint project of Mori Building and Sumitomo Realty & Development, which chose Rosewood to run the hotel.

"We are excited to introduce Rosewood Tokyo, a strategic expansion that reinforces our commitment in Japan," said Sonia Cheng, chief executive of Rosewood Hotel Group.

The scheme

Roppongi 5-Chome is a large mixed scheme of hotel, residences, shops and offices on a site of about 10 hectares near Roppongi Hills, with a gross floor area of about 1 million sq m, according to the property publication estie. Plans call for a tower of about 330 metres, centred on offices, and a second tower of about 290 metres given mainly to residences, along with shops, cultural venues and halls. The scheme will connect directly, by an underground passage, to Roppongi Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Toei Oedo Line.

The hotel will take the top floors of the 330-metre tower. It will have about 200 rooms and suites, some of them with three bedrooms, with restaurants and bars drawing on Tokyo's food culture. There will be an Asaya wellbeing space with an indoor pool, fitness and yoga rooms, a grand ballroom and other event spaces, and access to the Manor Club.

No opening date was announced. Estie reports that opening is planned for the 2030 financial year or later, and that completion, first planned for that year, is expected to slip because of rising construction costs and labour shortages.

Rosewood and Mori

Rosewood came to Japan in March 2025 with Rosewood Miyakojima; Tokyo will be its second hotel in the country and its first in a city. In the wider region, guests may already know Rosewood Bangkok. Its residences in Asia include Rosewood Residences Hong Kong, 186 homes open since 2019, Rosewood Residences Guangzhou, 355 homes in a 111-storey tower, and Rosewood Residences Kamala in Phuket, 14 homes.

Mori Building has shaped much of Roppongi already. Its homes nearby include the Roppongi Hills Residence, open since 2003, and the towers at Azabudai Hills, such as Azabudai Hills Residence A.

For a guest, Roppongi will gain a Rosewood with an indoor pool and a direct link to Roppongi Station, though not before the 2030s. For anyone looking at Mori's residences in the area, the scheme adds a residential tower of its own and a Rosewood hotel next door, although the announcement says nothing yet about Rosewood-branded homes.
