Ginzan Onsen, Obanazawa藤屋
Fujiya Inn
Fujiya is an eight-room ryokan in the middle of Ginzan Onsen, the Taisho-era hot-spring street along the Ginzan river in the mountains of northern Yamagata; the family has kept an inn here since the Edo period and the fourth generation built the three-storey wooden inn in the Taisho era. In 2006 Kengo Kuma remade the inside behind its old facade with screens of split bamboo, washi walls and green hand-blown glass, and the inn has no signs or room numbers inside.

Fujiya Inn releases its rooms on set dates, months ahead. Tell us your dates and our team in Japan books it for you, at the inn’s own rate. We ask for the room we would choose and look after everything else with the inn on your behalf: your preferences and requests, any special arrangement, from a celebration to a car from the station, and whatever you need before and during your stay. The price and cancellation terms are confirmed with you first.
Yamagata Airport, then 7 minutes by taxi to Sakuranbo-Higashine station, 20 minutes by train to Oishida and 40 minutes on to Ginzan; a few buses run direct from the airport.
