The Lowlands circuit

Scotland's Lowlands by rail, with no car of your own: five nights in Edinburgh, the train over the Forth and up through Fife to the home of golf, and on to the great hotel in the Perthshire hills. Three stops, each a short ride from the last, and a choice at the end: Glasgow for a night or two more, or back to Edinburgh for the flight.

The Gleneagles Hotel

Gleneagles is a country house hotel and golf resort in Strathearn, Perthshire, conceived by the Caledonian Railway's general manager Donald Matheson and opened on 7 June 1924. James Braid's King's and Queen's courses opened in the grounds in 1919 and Jack Nicklaus's PGA Centenary Course came later, alongside a shooting school, an equestrian school and a spa.

ScotRail from Gleneagles station, a few minutes from the door: to Glasgow Queen Street in about an hour, for a night or two more in the city, or back to Edinburgh Waverley in the same time. Both have flights home.
