After a month in Australia, it was time to visit its neighbouring country, new Zealand. Four Points by Sheraton Auckland is the first Marriott property in New Zealand debuted in 2017. It accommodates 255 guest rooms and suites, and a restaurant and a rooftop bar. Its central location is highly convenient, with many attractions within walking distance, making it a practical choice for business and leisure travellers alike.
There is JW Marriott which opened in early 2023 and happens to be the second Marriott property in New Zealand. However, for this time of stay, I chose Four Points for the JW’s renovations and mixed reviews.
Check-in :
After 3 hours flight from Melbourne at midnight, we arrived at the hotel in Auckland around 6 am. Despite the abnormal hour, the front staff acknowledged our elite status and kindly accommodated us with an early check-in, enabling us to recharge before starting our day. This gesture was highly appreciated and set a positive tone for our stay.
Room :
For the first 2 days, we were upgraded to a Larger Guest Room, located at the corner of the building. The room was spacious, with a clean and modern design. As Four Points is a 4-star property, the overall amenities were comfortable, meeting expectations for a hotel of its class.
For the rest of 3 days, we were upgraded to a Suite as a sweet gesture to celebrate my birthday. This suite provided a panoramic view of the CBD and a partial ocean view. It featured a separate living room with a small kitchen and a cozy bedroom, though I was surprised that it lacked a bathtub, whereas the Larger Guest Room did have one.

Conclusion :
Overall, Four Points by Sheraton Auckland delivers a good value as a 4-star Marriott property. While it does not provide the luxury experience, its value proposition lies in the central location and panoramic views of the city at the fraction of the cost. The early check-in and birthday upgrade were pleasant personal touches. The one thing I was not fond of is the blue-tinted windows slightly detracted from the room’s ambiance. For Marriott loyalists, business travellers or people looking for comfortable and reasonable options in the city centre, it’s a dependable option.
There was another Marriott property, JW Marriott Auckland. However, it was under partial renovation at the time of my visit. While the JW’s nightly rate was only $20–$30 more than Four Points, I chose Four Points for the absence of an executive lounge at JW and the generally underwhelming reviews regarding its dated building. I plan to stay the JW Marriott on a future visit to see if it lives up to expectations after the renovation is complete.
Outside Marriott, For people looking for a more luxurious experience, Park Hyatt Auckland is likely the best choice as it's located at the harbour, providing ocean views while still being in the heart of the city.
